Sci-Fi/Fantasy Results

We had a great evening on Thursday when SF author Andrew Bannister discussed our competition entries, as well as giving a sneak peak of his latest work in progress.

The theme for the SFF short story was “Eye” and there were some great entries. Andrew shortlisted six entries and we were able to have three of the authors with us either online or in person.

Honourable mentions went to the following:

  • An Eye for an Eye by Simon J Wood of Horncastle, Lincs. (great twist at the end)
  • The Man with the Red Eye by Emma Cooper of Thurso, Caithness (felt like reading a 1960’s John Campbell pick)
  • Jerno the Magician by Mark Smith of Farndon, Notts. (a twisty story that needed just a bit more elbow-room).

Third place

Creed’s Law by Jack Tevreden (aka Martin Costello of Newark, Notts) – clever, funny, stylistically retro, very accomplished.

Second Place

Under a Father’s Watchful Eye by Edward Barnfield in Dubai – also contemporary relevance, highly effective character engagement within a short piece, loved the voice and the last line!

First Place

Rate Me by Lexus Ndiwe of Leyton, London – contemporary relevance, smart, concise, strongly impactful.

We’ll look at putting the top three on our website within the next week or so.

Congratulations to the winners and the commended authors, and many thanks to all of the entrants and to Andrew Bannister for judging the competition and joining us for a great evening exploring the realms of science fiction and fantasy.
